Gubbio is a town and comune in the far northeastern part of the Italian province of Perugia (Umbria). It is located on the lowest slope of Mt. Ingino, a small mountain of the Apennines. It has Roman ruins and more than twenty places of worship (we stopped counting) and rather unhelpfully, the lifts for the mobility impaired are situated at the top of a very steep climb. They do have them at least which is something. Incongruous to the great antiquity of the town they have a condom machine which looks like part of the Enterprise flight deck. The basilica has mummified bodies out in the church rather than down in a crypt. And at lunch time, Gubbio shuts down more comprehensively than any other place we visited. Memorable for all those reasons.
